Convince Me
Maybe you were in a play yesterday. Maybe it’s been years.
1. Why would I pay to be in a show?
AfterWork Theater Project is a recreational theater experience for non-professional actors. We provide participants with the extraordinary opportunity to rehearse and perform fully-staged plays and musicals in NYC. Tuition is used to help cover the inordinate expense of producing theater in New York City: theater rental, rehearsal space, show rights, director fees, choreographer fees, musical director fees, lights, sound, costumes, sets, and band fees are just a few of the costs that tuition is applied to. In fact, tuition for all 40-50 participants doesn’t cover half the budget of putting the show together but it does help tremendously.
2. I don’t have time for this!
If there’s one thing all New Yorkers can agree upon it’s that we have NO free time. We totally get that. That’s why we designed AWTP to fit into the busiest of schedules. Yes, even you crazy professionals who put in 120-hour weeks will be able to manage this. Here’s how it works: Rehearsals are generally held Tuesday and Thursday evenings fro 6:30pm-10:300pm and Saturday mornings from 10am-2pm. Most cast members won’t be needed for all rehearsals but this is the basic schedule. Those of you who know your schedules won’t allow you to rehearse three times per week can indicate that you have “Limited Rehearsal Availability” (LRA) on your registration forms. From there we will work with you to to create a custom rehearsal schedule that works for you.
3. This is WAY too expensive for me!
When you break it down, tuition is equal to a handful of dinners at your favorite hot-spot and we guarantee you this will be a heck of a lot more memorable. We are committed to producing top quality shows in which you’ll be proud to participate. We’ve assembled a highly-acclaimed creative team to create a really special experience for you. This ain’t grandma’s after work theatre program. And remember, what better birthday gift could you ask your family for, than the opportunity to watch you perform in a show?!
4. I’m terrified to get on stage. What if I suck?!
Part of our creative team’s responsibility is to make sure each and every AWTP member is cast to maximize their potential to shine. We chose an ensemble show to ensure a ton of opportunities to highlight everybody’s strengths. Even if you’re a little rusty at first, give yourself a few weeks of rehearsal and you’ll fall right into the swing of things. Just remember, there’s no glory to be found in hiding out on the couch watching American Idol. What have you got to lose?!
5. I’m afraid I won’t get a part!
One quality that makes AWTP so unique is that you don’t have to audition to be cast in this show. All you have to do is register and you’re guaranteed a part. On launch day, our creative team will conduct a company assessment to determine what your strengths are. So if you love to dance, you might be cast in the dance ensemble. If singing is your strongest suit, you could be given a solo. Some performers will be more featured and others less so but the important thing is that everyone will have an equal amount of fun.
6. My life is crazy!
What if I end up having to drop out? At AWTP we understand that your life is extremely busy and unpredicatable. That is why we’re creating two separate casts, each of which will perform four shows. This way, if you need to drop out at any time for any reason, there will be another participant prepared to go on.
7. I’m allergic to actors’ egos.
So are we. AWTP is a space where you can escape the pressure and competition of everday life. This is about fun, community, and creativity. Come play with us and recapture the joy and uninhabitedness of your youth.
